In wake of the approaching cyclonic storm, Nilofar, the district administration in Kutch (Gujarat) has decided to evacuate 30,000 people living near the shore-line, official sources said.
“We have planned to evacuate 30,000 people living in “kaccha” houses in 123 villages of seven talukas. These villages are those located 0-15 kilometers from the shoreline,” said MS Patel, district collector of Kutch.
The district administration has also asked for additional forces. “Three of the four NDRF teams have already arrived to assist the district administration. The fourth will arrive tomorrow. We have also asked all officials to move into interior areas and assist the local residents in preparing for the storm,” Patel said.
The administration has also requested for two companies of State Reserve Police. Nilofar is expected to make landfall near Naliya on October 31.

Tropical Cyclone Nilofar explodes into cagetory 4 in Arabian Sea

October 28 at 12:29 PM

In fewer than six hours on Tuesday, Tropical Cyclone Nilofar exploded in intensity, strengthening from the equivalent of a category 2 hurricane into a category 4 hurricane with winds of 135 mph, and gusts up to 160 mph.
Tropical Cyclone Nilofar, which formed on Saturday, is moving north through the Arabian Sea and is expected to make landfall in northwest India or Pakistan later this week.

Nilofar, with a  is now the strongest tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea since Phet in 2010, and the third strongest cyclone on record. Weather Underground’s Jeff Masters writes:
Intense hurricanes are rare in the Arabian Sea, due to the basin’s small size, the interference of the summer monsoon, and the frequent presence of dry air and dust from the Arabian Peninsula. Nilofar’s 130 mph sustained winds make it the third strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Arabian Sea, behind Category 5 Cyclone Gonu of 2007, which devastated Oman, and the 145 mph winds of Category 4 Cyclone Phet, which also did heavy damage in Oman. Fourth place is held jointly by the 2001 India Cyclone 01A and Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ARB 01 (02A) of 1999, which were Category 3 storms with 125 mph winds.
Nilofar’s winds are forecast to increase to 145 mph on Tuesday before a gradual decrease in intensity over the next few days, which is good news for India and Pakistan. Dry air from the desert as well as high wind shear should help keep the storm at bay as it approaches the coast by the end of the week.

Cyclone Nilofar approaches India's Gujarat state

The sea in Porbandar in Gujarat Cyclone Nilofar, categorised as "severe" by weather forecasters, is expected to hit the western state of Gujarat
Authorities in India have alerted fishermen going out into the sea as a powerful cyclone is heading for the western coast.
Cyclone Nilofar, categorised as "severe" by weather forecasters, is expected to hit the western state of Gujarat during the "next 24 hours".
The Meteorological Department has predicted the storm will bring winds of up to 145km/h (90 mph).
A super-cyclone in 1999 killed more than 10,000 people in Orissa.
Earlier this month, Cyclone Hudhud pounded India's eastern coast, killing more than 40 people, causing extensive damage and prompting the evacuation of some 350,000 people.
The Meteorological Department said on Monday that Cyclone Nilofar would "intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours".
Heavy rainfall is expected in the coastal districts of Saurashtra and Kutch and the sea along the coast in Gujarat will be "rough to very rough," the weather department said in a statement.
Fishermen out at sea in the area have been asked to return to the coast, and authorities have put the coastal villages on alert.
"Roughly around 5,000 fishing boats are at sea. We are trying to contact them and ask them to reach the nearest port," senior state fisheries department official Pravinchandra Malli told The Indian Express newspaper.
It is still not clear whether the government is planning evacuations or sending disaster relief teams to the region.
Cyclonic storms are more common in India's eastern coast and Bangladesh - they routinely hit between April and November, causing deaths and widespread damage to property.
Last October, as many as 500,000 people in India were evacuated when Cyclone Phailin swept through Orissa and Andhra Pradesh states.
In December 2011, Cyclone Thane hit the southern state of Tamil Nadu, killing dozens of people.

JAIPUR: After Hudhud hit the country's eastern coast, it's now the turn for another cyclonic storm on the western coast. Nilofar is likely to hit western Rajasthan, especially Barmer and Jaisalmer, in the next five days.View image on Twitter

If the Indian Meteorological Department gets it right, Nilofar is like to move towards northern Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan and its impact could also be witnessed in western Rajasthan.

By Saturday, many places in Barmer and Jaisalmer may face dust storms followed by rains.

Nilofar is expected to bring in heavy to very heavy rain in Kutch area of north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast on Wednesday/ Thursday.

It will turn into a "very severe" cyclonic storm on Tuesday night and touch the peak with wind speed of 145 kmph. Similar situation and wind speed will persist till Wednesday.

On Sunday afternoon, Nilofar centred around about 1,270 km west-southwest of Mumbai and 910 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman).

It may be recalled that Rajasthan had experienced moderate to heavy rainfall following Hudhud's wrath in several parts of the state.   View image on Twitter

Speaking to TOI, BN Bishnoi, director Jaipur met office, said, "The storm is currently hovering over the Arabian sea. Barmer and Jaisalmer may face the ire of the storm if it enters Gujarat."

Met sources said, "From Arabian Sea it will move initially north westwards in the next 2 days. Thereafter, it will recur northeastward towards north Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coast.

Barmer, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer may get rain in the next 5 days," said an officer.

Since there was no official alert, Barmer and Jaisalmer officials said, "We will respond if any contingency takes place." For the past couple of days, eastern Rajasthan is witnessing mild to moderate showers due to the upper air cyclonic circulation.

Cyclone ‘Nilofar’ to hit Pakistan on Thursday

KARACHI: A deep depression over the Arabian Sea is expected to turn into tropical cyclone ‘Nilofar’ and will bring heavy rains along the coast of Pakistan, according to an official of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Mohammad Junaid, an official of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, said that the weather system is heading towards Gwadar’s coast in Balochistan but the cyclone could land in Oman as well. He also predicted that weather in the coastal areas might turn hot and humid prior to the storm.
It is not clear whether the cyclone would strike on the coasts of southern Pakistan or Oman, but heavy rains and thunderstorms could hit Balochistan’s coastal areas and also touch some areas of Karachi early on Thursday.
Fishermen and small craft owners in Balochistan and Karachi’s coastal areas have been advised to take precautionary measures and not venture into the deep sea until the striking of the cyclone is confirmed. But people seldom pay heed to weather advisories in Pakistan and often defy the government ban on entering water during rough currents.
At least twenty-three picnickers lost their lives on Eidul Fitr after drowning at Karachi’s Sea View beach this year. The government has since then taken strict action against violators of the ban on bathing imposed under Section 144 of the criminal procedure code. Several deaths were reported earlier when cyclone ‘Yemyin 03B’ hit Pakistan’s coastal areas in June 2007 and Cyclone Phet in June 2010. The name of a new tropical cyclone is determined by sequential cycling through lists of names submitted by the countries which are members of five tropical cyclone regional bodies.
Cyclone ‘Nilofar’ was named by Pakistan as it was the country’s turn in an alphabetical order.
